Petrobangla said the fire at a deep gas well in Chhota Inani, Cox's Bazar could take up to 15 days to bring under control.

The blaze erupted on October 27 when gas burst from underground at about 1,000 feet depth near Chhota Inani Bridge in Jaliapalong Union, Ukhiya Upazila.

Two geologists from the Bangladesh Petroleum Exploration and Production Company Limited (BAPEX) were dispatched to the site and are now stationed in Cox's Bazar to monitor developments.

Authorities have barred public access within a 100‑metre radius of the well and have deployed local law‑enforcement to maintain order.

Experts are allowing the gas to escape freely to prevent the fire from spreading, expecting the intensity to gradually decline over the next 15 days.

If the gas flow does not diminish within that period, the team will consider firefighting operations and other steps to stop the release.

Petrobangla, BAPEX and the local administration are jointly overseeing the situation round the clock.

Geological and 2D seismic surveys are underway to assess surrounding gas reserves, while Petrobangla urges residents to stay calm and cooperate with authorities.

Why it matters

The prolonged fire threatens local communities and disrupts energy production in a key coastal region of Bangladesh.
