Garment workers blocked the Dhaka-Tangail highway in Gazipur again on Monday, demanding a minimum monthly wage of Tk30,000 and bringing traffic to a standstill.
The blockade began around 8:30am, when workers from several factories gathered on the highway in the Palli Bidyut area.
Mohammad Amjad Hossain, superintendent of Gazipur Industrial Police, said around 1,000 workers occupied the highway at the time, halting traffic in both directions.
He said Industrial Police and other law enforcement agencies were working to bring the situation under control and restore traffic movement.
On Sunday, workers staged protests in Konabari, Safipur, Palli Bidyut and surrounding industrial areas, demanding the same wage increase.
Workers and police clashed intermittently, escalating tensions at several locations. Protesters also set fire to a police box and vandalized several vehicles.
The unrest disrupted traffic on the Dhaka-Tangail highway for around six hours on Sunday.
Why it matters
Continued labor unrest and highway blockades in key industrial belts threaten domestic manufacturing output and supply chain stability.
