Dhaka, Bangladesh – A Dhaka Second Additional Metropolitan Sessions Judge granted bail to Md Rakib Hossain on a Tk5,000 bond on Sunday, releasing him from custody in a case linked to the death of a school headteacher near the National Parliament House.
Judge Ayesha Akter Mousumi presided over the hearing and ordered the bail, citing the petitioner’s request and the absence of pending charges against the accused.
Defence lawyer Md Mehedi Hasan Majumder confirmed the bail, stating it will remain effective until the police submit their final report, and expressed optimism that his client would be released promptly.
The lawyer further asserted that the motorcycle initially seized by police belonged to Rakib but was not used in the snatching, adding that CCTV footage supports this claim and that the vehicle was parked at a garage at the time of the incident.
The incident, which occurred on August 29, involved Ranjila Parveen, 56, headteacher of Bagbari Government Primary School in Bogra’s Gabtali upazila. While travelling with her husband in an autorickshaw on Manik Mia Avenue, snatchers on a motorcycle grabbed her bag near Gate 12 of the Parliament House, causing her to fall and sustain severe head injuries that later proved fatal.
Following the tragedy, Rapid Action Battalion (RAB‑2) arrested several suspects, seized a smartphone, cash and a Yamaha R15 motorcycle suspected of being used in the crime, and continued investigations.
On August 31, the court granted a five‑day remand for the accused, allowing investigators to further examine evidence and pursue the case.
The bail decision underscores the ongoing legal processes surrounding the high‑profile incident and highlights concerns over public safety and due‑process rights in Bangladesh.
