Gopalganj, Bangladesh – On Saturday afternoon, activists of the outlawed Chhatra League and Jubo League launched an attack on police officers in the Raghunathpur ferry terminal area of Gopalganj Sadar upazila. The assailants, armed with sticks, vandalised a police patrol vehicle and wounded two officers, according to the local police station.

The incident unfolded around noon as a procession of supporters for Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina marched through the area. Video footage circulating on social media shows the crowd chanting “Joy Bangla” before the violence erupted. Police Officer-in-Charge Md Aminul Islam described the scene: “When police tried to stop the procession, the participants attacked with sticks and damaged the vehicle.”

Two police personnel, including Sub-Inspector Phul Mia, sustained injuries and received primary treatment at Gopalganj 250-bed General Hospital. The officer‑in‑charge confirmed that both officers are now in stable condition.

In response, senior police officials deployed additional forces to the district and set up checkpoints at key locations to restore order. An operation to arrest members of the banned Jubo League and Chhatra League involved in the attack is underway.

The attack underscores a rising pattern of political violence involving outlawed student and youth wings of major parties in Bangladesh. Authorities have repeatedly warned that such incidents threaten public safety and challenge the rule of law.

Local law‑enforcement agencies have pledged to intensify security measures across the district, aiming to prevent further disruptions and ensure the safety of civilians and officers alike.
