Bangladesh remains firmly committed to multilateralism and supports meaningful United Nations reform to address global challenges, State Minister for Foreign Affairs Humaiun Kobir said in a message marking United Nations Day on Saturday.
He stated that the government, led by Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, remained determined to strengthen democratic governance, uphold human rights and the rule of law, and promote accountable institutions.
The election of Bangladesh’s foreign minister as president of the 81st UN General Assembly underscored the government’s renewed impetus for multilateral engagement, he said.
Kobir stated that Bangladesh supported a more representative, transparent, and effective United Nations, which included meaningful reform of the Security Council so that the organization could respond to contemporary realities and deliver for all.
“At a time of growing geopolitical tensions, armed conflicts, humanitarian crises and widening inequalities, multilateralism is not merely an option, it is an imperative,” he said.
He called for a renewed commitment to dialogue, the peaceful settlement of disputes, sovereign equality, and respect for international law.
Highlighting Bangladesh’s contribution to global peace, the state minister stated that the nation's engagement with the United Nations was rooted in action and solidarity.
As one of the leading contributors to UN peacekeeping operations, Bangladesh’s peacekeepers continued to serve in challenging environments worldwide, he said.
He reaffirmed Bangladesh’s commitment to increasing women’s involvement in peacekeeping operations and in decisions related to peace and security.
Kobir stated that Bangladesh’s partnership with the United Nations encompasses sustainable development, disaster resilience, poverty reduction, gender equality, and humanitarian action.
Noting that Bangladesh continued to host more than 1.2 million Rohingyas forcibly displaced from Myanmar, he called for sustained international support for their early and sustainable return to Myanmar.
He also stressed the need to ensure finance, technology and capacity-building support for developing countries, least developed countries and climate-vulnerable nations as the international community pursued the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
Extending warm greetings to the United Nations and its member states, Kobir stated that United Nations Day highlighted the enduring relevance of the UN Charter and collective action in addressing shared global challenges.
“Let us work together to restore trust, bridge divisions and build a world where peace, justice and prosperity are shared by all,” he said.
