Bangladesh on Sunday reaffirmed its commitment to constructive engagement with the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, highlighting priorities of strengthening democracy, safeguarding fundamental freedoms, and advancing institutional reforms.

State Minister for Foreign Affairs Humaiun Kobir reaffirmed the commitment when newly appointed Chief of the OHCHR Mission in Bangladesh Sabine Magdalena Lauber presented her credentials to him at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, according to a ministry press release.

Welcoming Lauber and congratulating her on assuming office, Kobir highlighted the government's priorities of promoting good governance, the rule of law, and protecting human rights and fundamental freedoms, including freedom of expression and of the press. He underscored the importance of building strong institutions through legal and institutional reforms.

The state minister also highlighted Bangladesh's continued engagement with UN Special Procedures mandate holders. They exchanged views on the forthcoming visits of the Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in Myanmar and the Special Rapporteur on the right to education.

Kobir called upon the OHCHR Mission to ensure that its programmes and activities remain aligned with the government's priorities and assured Lauber of full government support and cooperation in discharging her responsibilities.

Lauber appreciated the government's constructive engagement and reaffirmed OHCHR's readiness to support Bangladesh's efforts to promote and protect human rights and strengthen relevant institutions. She outlined her priorities and planned activities during her tenure, emphasising the importance of continued dialogue and cooperation with the government.

Lauber is assuming office as the first chief of the OHCHR Mission in Bangladesh, established under a three-year memorandum of understanding signed between Bangladesh and OHCHR in July 2025.

Why it matters

The engagement sets the framework for international cooperation between Bangladesh and the UN human rights office under the newly established mission.
