Bangladesh’s first four-lane cycle track has been inaugurated in Chittagong to ease traffic congestion and promote an environmentally friendly transport system.

Finance and Planning Minister Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury formally inaugurated the track on Friday morning. Chittagong City Corporation Mayor Dr Shahadat Hossain was also present at the inauguration ceremony.

Built under the city corporation’s Chittagong Airport Road Expansion and Other Physical Infrastructure Development project, the road stretches about 2.2 kilometers and features four lanes. A median has been constructed in the middle using kerbstones, while a dedicated cycle track runs alongside a landscaped walkway on one side.

The initiative aims to ensure safe, comfortable and environmentally friendly transport for city residents and tourists. Officials noted that the separate lane is expected to improve cyclists’ safety and expand opportunities for eco-friendly travel within the urban area.

City Mayor Dr Shahadat Hossain stated that the project is also expected to encourage residents to adopt healthier and more active lifestyles as part of broader urban infrastructure improvements.
