State Minister for Foreign Affairs of Bangladesh, H.E. Mr. Humaiun Kobir, and the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Iraq, H.E. Mr. Mohammed Hussein, signed two Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) on 17 October 2026 in Baghdad, on the sidelines of the Council of Foreign Ministers of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC).

The first MoU provides for the mutual exemption of visa requirements for holders of diplomatic and official passports, removing a long‑standing administrative hurdle for officials travelling between the two capitals.

The second MoU establishes a mechanism for regular political consultations, creating a structured forum for dialogue on bilateral and regional issues.

Both ministers exchanged warm greetings and reaffirmed their commitment to deepen friendly and cooperative relations between Bangladesh and Iraq, expressing confidence that the agreements will give fresh momentum to bilateral engagement.

Major General Md Maksudul Haque, Bangladesh’s ambassador to Iraq, attended the signing ceremony, underscoring the high‑level nature of the event.

The agreements come as Bangladesh seeks to expand its diplomatic outreach within the OIC framework, while Iraq aims to strengthen ties with South Asian partners.

The MoUs are expected to facilitate smoother diplomatic travel and enhance coordination on political matters, contributing to broader regional cooperation.

Why it matters

The agreements will facilitate diplomatic travel and deepen political dialogue between Bangladesh and Iraq, supporting broader regional cooperation.
