An army soldier was killed in an exchange of fire between joint forces and an armed human trafficking gang during an operation to rescue hostages in the Rongikhali hills of Teknaf upazila, Cox’s Bazar, on Thursday. Acting on intelligence, a joint team comprising members of the Bangladesh Army’s 10 Infantry Division, Border Guard Bangladesh, and local police launched the operation at approximately 5 pm on November 5.
According to the Inter Services Public Relations, an armed gang of 15 to 16 members had held around 120 Rohingya and Bangladeshi nationals hostage in the remote hilly area. The gang members opened fire after sensing the presence of the security forces, triggering a fierce gunfight between the two sides.
During the exchange, 27-year-old Army soldier Md Titas Sheikh was shot in the left shoulder and sustained severe blood loss. He received initial treatment at a nearby facility before being transferred to the Combined Military Hospital in Ramu, where the attending physician pronounced him dead.
In the course of the operation, the joint forces recovered one pistol, one locally made firearm, and four rounds of ammunition. Security personnel successfully detained five suspected members of the criminal gang and rescued 57 hostages. The Bangladesh Army expressed deep condolences to the fallen soldier's grieving family and honored his ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty.
