Brief Profile of

Abul Hasan Chowdhury

Abul Hasan Chowdhury, affectionately known as Kaiser, was born in Dhaka on April 15, 1951. His father, Justice Abu Sayeed Chowdhury, served as the President of Bangladesh after its independence.

Kaiser completed his matriculation from St. Gregory’s High School in 1968 and later earned his Master’s degree from Oxford University in 1976.

In 1991, he was elected to the National Parliament for the first time. He was reelected by popular vote in the general election held on June 12, 1996, under a Caretaker Government, representing the Tangail-1, Madhupur constituency. Subsequently, he was inducted into the Cabinet as the State Minister for Foreign Affairs, a position he held until 2001.

Throughout his career, Abul Hasan Chowdhury visited numerous countries, including England, France, Italy, Germany, Switzerland, the USA, Malaysia, Thailand, India, China, Australia, Japan, and Pakistan, among others, to foster diplomatic relations and represent Bangladesh on various global platforms.

During an official visit to Washington, he participated in an Oval Office meeting with President Bill Clinton. In subsequent visits, he held exclusive meetings with Tom Pickering and Richard Armitage, both serving as Deputy Secretaries of State at the time.

In 2004, he visited Washington, D.C., to address a seminar attended by U.S. Congress members and senior State Department officials. The event was hosted by the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) and moderated by Ambassador Teresita Schaffer. During the same trip, he served as a visiting scholar at Penn State University for two weeks.

In the summer of 2005, Mr. Chowdhury led a delegation to China comprising former bureaucrats, bankers, and journalists.

As a prominent diplomat, he was one of the original signatories of the BIMSTEC subregional group, now comprising Bangladesh, India, Myanmar, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Nepal, and Bhutan.

Since leaving public office, Abul Hasan Chowdhury has been leading KNS Consultants Ltd., a consultancy firm associated with the Nitol Group, a leading Bangladeshi conglomerate in transport and other sectors.

In his leisure time, he enjoys playing cricket, reading, and traveling.
